View Full Version : 352 Build
Hey Ya'll
I have a '66 F100 with a 352. I've got another 352 that I'm gonna build for it. Cut out a lot of down time that way, ya know.
I've got some 428 heads. And I'm thinking about using a 390 crank and I think the block is already bored out a little, maybe .030.
Any suggestions for this build? [Just because this forum needs some FE love in here.] I don't want anything extreme. This is truck is gonna remain pretty original. It's the most original truck I've seen in this shape, unmolested. The original spare tire was even still under the bed.
Here's a pic...

I'm dissapointed in you Edward.....
The FE block came in 9 different sizes... The 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427, and 428... so there are many different configurations you can go with..... I personally love the FE blocks... Great engines... I think I have 5 or 6 of them now...

I love being asked what FE stands for. Its all I will run. Ford Edsel. I am looking atbuilding a FT series. FordTruck. Do any of you have any extra MEL engine laying around. Ford Edsel Mercury.:)
MEL - Mercury Edsel Lincoln. ;)
I would love to build an old Merc pickup with a MEL series big block and have a vanity plate on the back that would read, "MEL X2." Mel times two. :D

johnny you forgot the 391 :)

Nope.. the 391 was a FT engine.... I was naming the FE engines.... Now I know you'll say that the 361 was an FT engine too, and that's right.. but there was two 361's... one was and Edsel (FE) engine, and the other was a truck (FT) engine...
It was my understanding the 360 was FE and the 361 was FT.
Why would there be a 360 and 361 FE?

There was also a 330, but not sure whether it is considered an FE or FT. I always thought it was an FE.

Well I was trying to go off my memory, but you guys forced me to go to my books...
The FE displacements...
332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427, and 428..
The FT displacements..
330, 359, 361, 389, and 391..
The MEL displacements...
383, 410, 430, and 462..
and the Super Duty Family/ big ass truck engines..
401, 475, 477, and 534
"534" we had one of these in the firetruck were I use to be a fireman at... that thing was a monster... it would flatout fly... plus it had straight pipes (no muffler) you could hear it coming for miles, didn't need a siren
And Mel... why were there a 360, and a 361... because the 361 was an Edsel only engine... atleast when it was first introduced.. who knows what Ford did later on...

Who knows if the 390 piston and a set of lamans rods will fit the 391?

As far as I can tell the only differences were the crankshafts... the harmonic balancers, and flywheels..
The FT has a larger diameter snout (The FE snout is 1.38 inches, and the FT is 1.76 inches).. and a thicker flywheel flange... Plus the FT is externally balanced like the 410 and 428's....
They both used the same rods.... the long rods (6.540 inches) and the short rods(6.488 inches).... Long rods were in the 332, 352, 360, and 361 FE engines, and the 330 FT engines... all the others (FE & FT) had the short rods..

Yes sir you can... you just have to have the 391 crank snout cut down to 1.38 inches by a machine shop.. oh, and the flywheel flange cut down as well....
and both were a 4.052 bore, and use the 3.784 throw crank so your good there...
Not really sure about the balancing as the FT's were externally balanced, and "most" of the FE's were internally balanced... I'd ask the machine shop that one...

Hiya, Mel.
Ed..you noob.
I've got a couple 352s sitting here..one of 'em is a '64 hipo too. The 390 crank upgrade is a no brainer, Mel. But those 428 heads?...I used the C4AE hipo 352/390 castings on my 428 and threw the 428 heads and original intake on the 361FT I have in the ole F-250 dump truck. Speaking of which..getting rid of that dump truck since we gots us a 'new' 7.3 F-450 with a 14' stake-body dump..so the 361FT/428 hybrid is 'available'.

427 FTW!!! ><>: lol
K, maybe not the best to stuff in a truck.........
352's are a tank, all the ones I've had were super reliable.
I'd build close to stock and just cruise with it. (now I know I'm getting old) >B<
