At selling time the 360 magically turns into a 390.

Be very careful and measure the stroke to verify.

I developed a FIRMMM aproach many years ago that unless someone can verify with PROOF that a given truck has a 390 in it then it is probably a 360

For some reason my 390 is missing 38 cubic inches... http://7879blueovalbronco.mybb3.org/images/smilies/unknw.gif

Be very careful and measure the stroke to verify.

For sure! :)
It's easy as pie and there are a couple ways to do it.
One is to turn the engine over with a dowel/pencil in a spark plug hole.
The other is to get it at zero degrees on #1 and measure it and #4 both.
15/16" deep well socket and a cheater-pipe on the ratchet is what I use.

I've read this over and over and only found that to be true one time.
The guy was a liar and he wasn't very good at hiding it.

All the other times (many!) the owner was very disappointed in the results.

I believe, at this point, the line of BS started with the dealership's salesman
and continued on through the whole line of owners.

--------------------

I special ordered my pickup (late Nov '74) and it didn't come with an original
bumper, it's not on the build sheet. When I requested an original, the group
of 4 men told me with a straight face that my pickup "had a one ton frame
under it" and that the bumper I wanted "wouldn't fit". No kidding. So I went
out and looked (just like the head mechanic did) and came back and told
them word for word "all the [brand new] F100's look like they have one ton
frames under them too [just like my F150] so one of them should fit fine :)"

They looked at each other and the head salesman nodded to the head
mechanic and he went and swapped out the bumpers and took the icky
colored bumper with the dealerships named stamped into it, off.

Asked others about their bumpers from the same dealership and whether they
really wanted it and they told me with a proud tone to their voice... "no, but
my pickup has a one ton frame under it and so the stock bumper won't fit :)"

I told my story to a couple of those guys and they...
-did not like the story one bit!- :/
They preferred the lie over the truth.

And you wonder why the US is in such a mess huh? ;)
