View Full Version : My Buggy Build

Salt-Man

its based on the 78 bronco frame. I put in a D60 rear end with a trac-loc. A 460. C6. 203 range box . Np205. Coil over shocks on all 4 corners. Dual front shocks n a fuel cell. The doubler I put together myself using the stock coupler. It would be better in a long wheel base. My rear shaft is only around 13" lol. And the buggy will have a aluminum skinned tube body

What did you do with the Bronco you were building?

Salt-Man
12-21-2011, 12:58 PM
:dummy well ????? This is it ??? My wants n desires changed as they always do ? So when we decided to move out to the property were at I needed something more suited to the task it will be performing. So long story short I pulled the body n traded that for some other parts I needed ?? I still wanted to keep the bases of the 78 Bronco. But the body would have been too heavy for my needs. So I sent it off to a good home with a mechanic at a local Ford dealership

Salt-Man
12-26-2011, 08:29 PM
it mounts like any accessary. Its a mcCulloch which is who paxton bought out. So its a early generation paxton. It came on the desoto. Its a vs57 look it up. They didnt put out a ton of pressure but this has been modded somewheres along its path. So I wont know what it puts out till I gauge it after its running

Pressuring the manifold below the carb aint gonna work. That 'charger is made to blow through a carb. You would also need a carb setup for this.

I know how to post them. I couldnt access it last time I tried. And your lodgic makes no sence to me. Its not a high pressure blower for one. And if it can come thru the carb why not below it. Im goin to give it a shot. Thats the whole idea for me. People said I couldnt build a doubler by hand too and I did it. Im goin to make a nozzle so it dont blow up ? But I appreciate your input. Thats why I come here. But I have to atlest try. I can always remove shit.....

Salt-Man
12-27-2011, 10:40 AM
oh and this blower was modified by someone. It no longer needs the solinoid to work. And to do a blow thru edelbrock why cant you just run the vent tubes outside the hat. That way your not pressurizing your bowls?

redmt79
12-27-2011, 11:50 AM
If you pressure below the carb without drawing through it, you will not get any fuel out of the venturies. A standard carb operates by having vacuum below it, not pressure. You are basically doing the same thing as adding a hugh vacuum leak below the carb. Even if you get it to run, I highly doubt you could jet the carb fat enough to work.

ok. I talked to my Dad about this. He said he ran it just like that on his small block 400 chevy and it ran great.

You have to be thoroughly confused about what it was exactly that your "Dad did" that worked. Think carefully about what it is you are saying here; in a nutshell you said: "I'm gonna pressurize the intake and not expect the air to flow backwards striaght up right outa the carb and air cleaner. Where I'm gonna get fuel while air is flowing backwards outa the carb..not sure yet".:D

You certainly cannot pressurize just the intake directly, bypassing the carb, and you cannot blow through the carb unless you place the entire carb in a plenum box and blow through that.

I've done several of the 'blow through carb' turbo setups. Heck, there was a 534 cubic inch V8 marine engine around for many years that came factory with big turbos and a Holley 4-barrel in a blow-through plenum box. Some are still around; a buddy has a pair in a '62 Hatteras sportfish.

And then, of course, there is the most common option..the carb is mounted on the suction/air-intake side of the blower. :p

Gilligan
12-29-2011, 12:49 PM
From the installation manual for the VS-57 we find this little nugget:

The Model VS-57 supercharger has been designed for installation before the carburetor
in the overall carburetion system. Under no circumstances should the supercharger
be installed between the carburetor and the intake manifold

>M<:>M<:

Anywho, like nearly all other turbos and centrifugal superchargers, the VS-57 is designed to "blow through" the carburetor with the carburetor mounted in a plenum box.

Salt-Man

but I will get started on figuring out how to build a plenum box. I mounted the pipe down low just in case it didnt work cause Id have to shorten the thing anyhow. Its all good little buddy. Its like buildin a radio out of coconuts... Ya gotta atleast try?????

Salt-Man
12-29-2011, 08:21 PM
ok I know Im beating a dead horse here but my mind wont let it go and its too cold to go back out. Anyways. I dont doubt what you say as bein true. I will have no problem sayin your right n Im wrong. But I still want to try this. Even tho Im just tryin to reinvent the wheel. So with all that said.... If a motor is just a big suction pump. Why wont it still suck in with the S.C in the mix. Its not goin to blow any faster then the motor turns over??. As I said before " I gotta try. Oh and I kinda like the idea of putting the carb before the suction end of the blower?? That seems doable too with the same setup. Just split it in two n pipe the carb to the blower intake??

Blue79
12-29-2011, 08:54 PM
Because...... Ah screw it, try it. :)
A few of us here have had blower cars and its really easy to screw up a setup and scatter parts over the yard or blow the intake over the neighbors house. Trust me get online and read about some forced induction setups before you try something strange. Even the carbs will be modded for a blower.

Well hang on a sec..lets not be too hasty. You have a blower in yr possession, yes? Thus..it must be installed on something to blow on. Lets get this crate movin on here..:D

Salt-Man

I would like to ask a different question and I promise Ill listen and not argue !!! Why does the entire carb need to be incased and not just run the vent tubes outside the hat ???

Blue79
12-30-2011, 07:44 PM
Because the blower you have is like a old paxton setup and charges the surrounding atmosphere for the carb to have access to when you ask it. Its a volume thing not a psi thing you need some air that's ready to be sucked in. Google a paxton S/C setup and look at the workings.

Gilligan
12-30-2011, 07:47 PM
I would like to ask a different question and I promise Ill listen and not argue !!! Why does the entire carb need to be incased and not just run the vent tubes outside the hat ???

Same reason you cannot simply pressurize the intake manifold..zee carb, she only suck zee fuel when zee engine vacuum cries out for it from underneath.

The blow-through setup does require a fuel regulator that uses the plenum pressure as the reference side (as opposed to atmospheric pressure)....

ok I got my plenum box mocked up. Im goin to see if my buddy can make one up outta aluminum. I dont have a tig. If he cant Ill do one outta sheet metal

Either will be fine.

IT's a simple shoebox after all...big enough to set the carb in..holes cutout in bottom to mount between carb and intake, and a 'lid' with enough screws in it to make a tight seal to the lower box and a 2.5 or 3" hose nipple on top (whatever the blower dia is..).

Word of advice..make sure the blower connection nipple is NOT blowing straight in to the top of any of the carb venturis. Mount the nipple so its blowing in to the plenum box across the top of the carb or along side it.

so it should be fine then. Cool. I have one I bought that looks like it was made outta wood then imperfferated with sealant. So I soaked this one in oil for awhile. I got the box started n all bent up out of one piece. Now. I just have to make up the reinforcing frame work. I got the bright idea to leave room for a heater core I have. Thinking of making it a intercooler ??? Maybe make a cool can to fill with ice ??? N pump coolant thru it with a fuel pump ?? Its coming along good tho. Thanks again for straightening me out on this. Im liking this much better

Salt-Man
01-07-2012, 06:07 PM
I know that most intercoolers work by air flowing thru them and then bein cooled by the air thats bein pushed by when the car is running down the road. But in this case that would not be feasible. So thats why Im thinking of its own little coolant system

undefined.. I dont know why this undefined crap keeps happening ? Anyways I said thank you. I needed a good laugh today when I read that... I disconnected the msd n got spark but no fire ? So I called on replacement parts n found out how much they are n pulled the thing out n dropped in my hei. Just need to hook up the hotwire. We'll see what happens

I just fired it up for the first time ! I am stoked ! I put in my gm hei conversion dist for a 302 that I converted to fit the 460 after I found out what replacement parts cost for the mallory dist. Got spark. Added gas n she popped. Kept messin with it until I found the sweet spot. Added gas again. Hit the start button n it roured to life... Yes ! Now to go weld up the headers. This is just the kickstart I was needing

got alot done today. Finished welding up one header n bolted it n the muffler on. Started welding the other side. Got almost half done n ran out of sheild gas. So I mounted my gauge cluster n tach. I have 50 lbs of oil pressure just turning it over. Might have to wait till after the first of the month to finish it? I got alot of welding to do. But I can finish some other little things. Its almost ready to roll out

well I guess I am goin to have to pull the water pump and check the impeller ! I have no water flow at all. I thought maybe the electric pump motor was running too slow. Bachwards or I had the pipes crossed ? But I looked it all over and now am looking to the impeller. No big deal just sucks.

Salt-Man
03-28-2012, 07:52 PM
good news. The pump wasnt bad at all. There was a water port plugged up with crap. But I did change the water pump anyways. The one on it had the round cast iron impeller and the othe one I had has the sheet metal one that looked like it would sling more water and work better. So I put that one on

well I got good water flow now. Got the front brakes plumbed in n gravity bled. I made a cavas top for the cockpit. N Regrooved one tire with my router. Took about n hour. Just got to do the other 3 ? Lol it looks good to me tho. I sent buff some pics n hope he can post'em up 4 me. Now if life will stop getting in my way I'll get my weldin stuff I need to finish up tomorrow n be paintin this sucker by the weekend :)

only had a little time to work on it today. But I bled the brakes out right. Cleaned out my fuel cell n swapped out electric fuel pumps. N even tho I only have one header n muffler on I stated it just for a moment to get all its juices flowin. Got mine goin too :) i still have not made it to the welding place to replenish vital materials yet. Hopefully...... Tomorrow ? and I did alittle bit of the regroove on the other tire. I dont think that small router will live through this ? But I have a bigger one in storage. Now.... Where ya at Buff-Man ??? You was gunna post me pics fur me ? :) Im sure your just busy... Later folks

well I dont think this cheap little trim router is goin to make it ? I just went out for a few moments to cut more grooves while its cool out and its gettin hot fast n takin longer n movin slower per groove. The bit is still nice n sharp tho. N wouldnt ya know I forgot to stop at my storage to get the other??? Sumbitch??? Lol

Salt-Man
04-08-2012, 07:13 PM
I was right. It didnt make it. I got down to the last tread to cut n it bucked n slowed down n started smokin. I had to cut out that last groove with my pocket knife lol. But its done. So the router method does work n work well.! You just need a good. Big one

ok back to the buggy. Well it is basicly done. I moved it under its own power yesterday :) I just need to get some more trans fluid n rework the shifter. Then its just cosmetic from there. But I gotta say. It was a bit intimidateing n scary to put her in gear for the first time after working on it for soooooooooo looooooong I was scared that output shaft I made would break :( or something else would happen. I did notice I dont like the front brakes only thing I did

Salt-Man
04-30-2012, 06:36 PM
Wow is that thing scary ! I swear it pulled the front wheels off the ground ? Dont know for sure but it felt like it. I got some bugs to work out of the linkage. But this thing is a beast. I dont need nitrous or a blower !

Salt-Man
05-01-2012, 11:04 AM
ok I got alittle issue with the range box poppin out of gear. I should have tried harder to get that shaft as true as possible. Ill bet thats whats causeing it. Hopefully nothing a shifter lock wont fix. And I bent one of my linkages :c cause I didnt make it strong enough :c

I'll try to send one after the 19th. I just entered " Big Poppa Smurf " in a mud bog race. So I need to finish workin the bugs out of her. I changed the carb today n it runs much better. But it still has a vacuum leak I need to hunt down. I think its in that carb plate riser I made. So Im gunna pull it tomorrow. Update soon.
