View Full Version : Converting Non Cruise Wheel to Cruise (horn)

Alright, I just preformed this myself, took my old non-tilt/non cruise wheel out of my 79, and installed a tilt/cruise wheel. Now when this is done, your horn will not work, so you will need to install a relay to make the horn sound (instead of shorting out the fusible link for the horn).

What needs to be done, is to remove the connector for the steering column and find the large yellow wire and the large dark blue wire, you will need to cut these both. take the end of the yellow wire that runs into the dash wiring harness, and wire that up to pin 30 and pin 85 of the relay, take the dark blue wire that runs into the dash harness and connect that to pin 87, take the yellow wire that runs up to the horn button and connect that to pin 86. this will allow the grounded signal that comes from the horn button on a cruise wheel to actuate the relay, and allow the power to flow to the horn. The extra blue wire that is hanging loose and cut, would go down to the cruise module, if you are installing cruise this is needed, if not, then just tape it off.

Bronco79. That's some good info, but why bother to do the switch if you aren't gonna add cruise? I would just disconnect the horn until you find a donor truck that has the cruise set up. Then you just have to plug in the correct parts without cutting up your harness. Almost every truck I work on gets a new cruise harness. Alot of times when I go to a yard that's one of the first things I look at on the truck. Around here I either get them for free or at least under $10. It's a little time cosuming, but I just hate spliced wires on my trucks.

I eventually will add cruise, but it will have to be with a newer module out of a early 90's (to work with the EFI system)

I would like to find a proper cruise harness, but I have not had time to go through the junk yards yet, and I wanted to get the horn working with the cruise pad.
