Alright now...gonna try to liven up this section a little bit. I'm just wondering what you guys have done or plan to do to your 351M/400. I realize most folks regard these engines as boat anchors and swap to a 460, but I love them with a passion. I'm also looking for ideas for the engine build in my Bronco.
Here are the specs on Red's 400:
Holley 4150 650 cfm electric choke vac secondaries
Eddy Performer Intake
.030 overbore and hypertuetic step dish pistons
XE262 Comp Cam
Sanderson FC3 Headers
True Duals...2.25" pipe through 12" Cherry Bombs
Dyno numbers= 347hp/442tq
Future plans call for a Barnett 496 stroker, CHI 3v heads, Holley 4150 850cfm, offenhauser intake...that would be 550+hp/600+tq on premium fuel
Here are the probable specs on the Bronco's 351M build to be done by Easter:
Holley 4150 650cfm
Eddy Performer intake
.040 overbore and TMI pistons
XE256 Comp Cam
Hooker Headers
TMI 400 crank
True Duals...2.5" pipe through 8" Cherry Bombs
Desktop Dyno=342hp/440tq
So please guys, share what you've done or plan to do, and even give me some suggestions.

I keep putting off engine work on my 400, because I don't want to put any more money into the Bronco YET.
So far all I've done is put headers and 2.25" pipes and 12" glass packs...
I have a 600 CFM Holley 4v carb and aluminum edelbroke intake waiting to go on.
I want to put new cam and lifters, valve springs and seats, and a double roller timing set....
But then too, I also want a built 460, so who knows.

currently the build on my 408 is like 6 years old. a few years back I put SEFI on it using all factory ford parts.
Next big things are, I am going to try running it with E85. If it works out well, then I might jump a couple injector sizes up when I build a new mill in a year or so and run it on a diet of 100% E85. No other fuel will be in the engine.

My 400 has:
Performer manifold
Flowtech headers with dual exhaust
Edelbrock 600cfm carb
Comp 260H cam
Zeroed timing gears
the mains are .30 over, the pistons are aluminum, no idea if the block is bored out (probably) or if they are high compression pistons. Didn't tear it down that far, as that was all good. Has a mountian of power though, no prob keeping up with new trucks.
My 78's 410 (.040) likes lots of fresh oil and amazingly has no rust on the undercarriage! It does have a torque curve like a diesel.http://www.mrwbronco.com/smilie/burnout.gif

That's the problem. My 460 is at the engine builder's shop, far away from my M-blocks.
I've got no complaints about them though, the 400 in my '79 SuperCab has done everything it needs to do.
The 351M in my 2wd 78 truck has been very reliable

The only 400 build I have going at the moment is an EFI with Oz heads..but I want to stroke it and haven't decided how big, nor has my stimulus check showed up yet..so it sits. That..and MRW thinks he's getting that set of Oz heads offen me too.

Well I dunno when the 400 in my Bronco was last rebuilt but it still runs strong, good oil pressure/ good compression/ no smoke. I put on a 600cfm Holley carb and SP2P Edelbrock intake(good low end).
Everything else is stock.
I plan on later installing a EX256h Comp cam and corresponding valve springs/ lifters/ timing set. Maybe upgrading to Edelbrock Performer Intake but keeping the 600 Holley.
First order of business though is getting the distributer unstuck so I can take it out. Also need to do stuff to my 73 F100 and 79 F150.

Questions for you young whipper-snappers (400 experts):
I bought a 400 with ~22K miles-reman for Ford +.040-NO build up at tops of cylinders-has lots of carbon build up on valves-run with Edelbrock performer & big Holley carb. (maybe too big?)
I have collected an Edelbrock cam, lifters, & timing set, (need Ed valve springs)
& 600/650 Holley.
Is it going to be worth the $300 or so for TMeyer pistons & rings to run with the above? If so, would honing the cylinders be sufficient with new pistons & rings? Also will Cleveland 2V heads do anything for torque? (have a pr) & will the 400 intake fit Cleveland heads?
Any & all suggestions welcome!!
Thanks, Charles.

Cleveland 2V heads are identical to those on the 400. So no they are not really going to do anything for you, but yes the 400 intake will fit.
The build up on the valves could be from oil leaking past the valve guides.
I don't have any experience with Tim's stuff, so I can't really comment other than raising compression a bit is usually a good thing.

Should be somewhere from 500-550 HP/TQ range. TMI's engine dyno showed a similar one making over 400TQ at 2000rpm. It's going in a 79 shortbox 4x4.

I would like to know more about the system as well. I am considering FI for my Bronco.
I've looked at a few systems such as Mass Flo, Holley, Megasquirt and even taking a Ford one but the Powerjection seems the most straightforward. It resembles a 4500 carb with the electronics where the float bowls would be and uses 4 injectors. There is a wideband O2 sensor for feedack. The software is looks very familiar as I am used to the ThunderMax and TTI Mastertune for Harleys...that was a deciding factor in the choice of the system as well.
Here is a link:

I haven't either...but I've been beyond happy with the ThunderMax systems on the bikes, esp. when I got the advanced software so I'm drawing some conclusions from that. If all goes well, it will be running this year.

Just brought my 400 home from the machine shop in May. TMI stroked 400 to 434 cu in. CHI 2V heads. 4-bolt main caps. 10.3:1 KB pistons. Comp custom ground cam. custom oil pan. yadda yadda yadda. Haven't dyno'd it yet as I am going to do a frame off restoration on a 79 RXLT. Dyno program estimates 560 ft lbs torque and 450 hp! I hope for more hp!
Let see some pictures, of the motor and the resto. Most of us only hang out here for the truck porn (and to bust each others balls . . . )

MY 351m tore up a crank after sitting in a lake for three hours waiting for my dads 86 bronco to come pull me out so i built up the 400 i had in my garage so my 400 with an edlebrock intake and holly 650 with headman headers boss heads and an energizer cam is laughing it's self to sleep looking at the blown 351 sitting on the shelf. and p.s nothing is better to piss off a bunch of jeepers than a 400 with a t18 4 speed 78bronco with a 4in lift and 35's with an air horn as they struggal up a hill.
